Newborn Photography Session Tips

I’ve always been envious of the darling newborn photos I see floating around Facebook posted by family and friends.  The idea of having a photographer come to your house when the baby is a week old was so daunting to me.  How does your house not look like a mess?  What if your baby comes out looking like he’s been in a fist fight?  What if I still look six months pregnant in the pictures?

With the girls we did 3, 6, 9 and 12 month pictures.  They are all great, but with the girls older and so excited for the arrival of their little brother, I really wanted to capture those moments.  So I got brave and booked a newborn session last Fall.  When Will was born and ended up in the NICU, I was really close to canceling.  It all just seemed like too much – figure out clothing, getting the nursery put together – did I mention we moved to our new home two days before Will was born?

But I fought the urge and went for it.  I’m so glad I did.  Gina from Gina Cristine Photography came to our new house when Will was 9 days old and these are the images we get to treasure forever.

And then there are the candid moments that Gina captured without us even knowing…

Gina Cristine Photography has a few secrets of the trade that she is sharing with us today on how you can be ready for your newborn photography session and get the best pictures possible.

  1. Before booking your photographer, study their portfolio and make sure they are using safe practices and that babies do not look uncomfortable or strained.
  2. Let the baby call the shots.  Some babies are happiest wrapped up or curled up or stretched out.  The best newborn sessions are when the baby gets to do what he/she feels like instead of being forced into a position if they don’t want to be in.
  3. Keep the room temperature warm, around 80 degrees for the baby to feel comfortable, especially for those naked baby pictures.
  4. Keep clothing simple for siblings and parents.  If you read TLSF on a regular basis, you know we like to have our kids in fun prints and outfits.  But when photographing your new baby it is best to stay away from bold patterns and hair accessories so the focus is all on the baby.
  5. Have a Soothie pacifier on hand – they don’t leave marks around the baby’s mouth.
