In the midwest, we are soooo close to spring! I am ready to retire my knee-length down jacket, never to look back until late fall. Spring jackets are so much more exciting than massive, shapeless, puffy outerwear. Spring outerwear runs the gamut from classics such as a military jacket or trench to bold, brightly colored fit and flare confections. I am a bargain shopper by nature, so I have compiled a splurge vs. save of my favorite spring coats. Classics

best spring trench coat
Burberry-; Mango-

A trench is the ultimate classic spring coat and is worthy of a splurge. If I was going to splurge on any item, this would make the top of my list. However, if you (like me) don't have a few grand to spend on a coat, there are a multitude of options. The key is the fit- a trench shouldn't overwhelm you. It should nip in at the waist when belted and not go past the knee; this way, it will still show some leg and showcase your height.

best spring military inspired jacket
Saint Laurent-; Velvet-

A military jacket can venture into the shapeless territory if it isn't fit or styled properly. I favor the ones with a drawstring waist or keeping it open if you are more petite. I adore all of the brass detailing on the coats, but it can overwhelm you if you are busty.

spring blazers
Emilio Pucci-;  Nipon Boutique- Lord & Taylor

Many people don't think of a blazer as a coat, but I have a few that I wear over an outfit on a regular basis. A colored blazer is an excellent way to add color to an otherwise blah outfit, and you can use it to jazz up a basic fitted sheath dress after work.

Kate Spade-;  goodnight macaroon-

And yes, who could forget a statement coat? Go with a statement color, statement detail or BOTH! I love oversize bows- incredibly feminine yet slightly ironic (as in, yes, I know big bows like this are generally found on the rear of a horrible bridesmaid dress, but it just WORKS here!).

What coats are you picking up this spring season?
