Not only are we getting ready to head back to school, we are also heading back to activities. I've mentioned my daughters are dancers, but they also love gymnastics.

Back to school shopping is happening in our family! Sixteen days to go until the big first day. While we hold off a little bit on shopping for fall clothes, we are busy getting everything ready for a perfect first day.
If you're a longtime reader of The Little Style File, you'll know that in Pre-K Ellie was diagnosed as far sighted with an astigmatism. After wearing glasses for the end of Pre-K, Kindergarten and the first part of 1st grade, her vision improved and she didn't need glasses anymore. Unfortunately at this last eye exam, her far sightedness corrected itself but it made the astigmatism worse. So here we are, Ellie entering 3rd grade in a few weeks and added eye glasses to our back to school shopping list.
When you learn that your child needs glasses, your initial reaction is to walk out of the exam room and buy a pair of glasses. Right that second. It's a combo of guilt and wanting to fix things and it can lead to paying a whole lot more money than you really need to. One of the best back to school sales happens every August at JC Penney. JC Penney has kids eyeglasses for $29.99. I know! $29.99! It includes frames up to $120 and kid proof lenses along with a one year warranty. If the frames you pick are over $120, you just pay the difference. It's the best back to school deal around!
Here's a peak into our back to school shopping trip for kids eyeglasses.
Ellie had two requirements for her new glasses : style and comfort. She wants to look good and feel good and who can blame her? She does not like the glasses with those little nose pads so she went straight to the plastic section. Here are a few of her favorites...
What do you think? There is a serious purple and tortoise shell trend going on here! Her favorite pair that we ordered are tortoise shell and they will arrive in 1-2 weeks. But I'm going to order her favorite purple pair as a surprise. For under $30 it's too good to pass up! Plus having a back up pair makes things a lot easier if she forgets a pair at school or wants to change up her look to match her outfit.

A few weeks ago the girls had a visit to the dentist. For Ellie it was no big deal, she's been getting cleanings for years and has always been cavity free. But four year old Madeline has never let a hygienist or dentist do more than 'count her teeth' and at this visit she was going to get her first cleaning and set of x-rays. Because her big sis always gets a stellar report, we were shocked to find out that Madeline did not hit the genetic jack pot in the dental department. Her teeth are really close together and while we thought we had been doing a good enough job brushing, the x-rays told a different story.
The girls had seen commercials for Tooth Tunes and were dying to try them out. This seemed like the perfect opportunity. Ellie loved her One Direction Tooth Tunes toothbrush and Madeline went wild over her Alphabet penguin toothbrush.
The first thing we noticed is that two minutes is actually a pretty long time! The girls brushed for the entire song and I know without the music playing we would have stopped about one minute in, not nearly the length of time that is recommended. After the song was over, the kids wanted to brush their teeth again. Tooth Tunes is a hit!
Madeline says, "My favorite part about my Tooth Tunes toothbrush is everything! I just really like the song and the toothbrush and the button and the tune and well....everything!"
Ellie says, "I really like the music in my Tooth Tunes - it puts music in my mouth! My new toothbrush really makes my teeth sparkly clean!"
Their dad and I hope that with Tooth Tunes and an exciting new way to brush their teeth, Madeline's next visit to the dentist will be a much more pleasant experience.

The winter is an easy time to be less active. It's so tempting to snuggle on the couch all day and forget to get that blood flowing. Noelle Pikus-Pace, skeleton racer, has a great way her and her daughter stay active indoors!
Madeline, my four year old, has a strong love of yoga. And she's pretty good at it. Now that I'm due with baby #3 in about a month and a half, yoga is one of the best ways we can still stay active indoors together.
Yoga for children is a great way to keep them active and flexible. We have found several books and short videos to guide us through yoga poses that are age appropriate. We have the best time doing poses on our own and also working on some together.
After all of that exercise we always need a snack. Our go to is Kellogg's Special K. Madeline likes hers dry but I prefer it topped off with ice cold milk. It's the perfect way to chat about all of the fun we just had fill our tummies.
