Playchic Fashion Show

Playchic Fashion Show

For the past few years I have attended Chicago Toy & Game Fair with my family. Its a fun event that allows us to check out the hottest toys up close and personal! It's a great way to find out what the kids want to put on their holiday wish list.  My kids and husband look forward to attending it every year. My personal favorite event during Chicago Toy & Game Week is playChic an  innovative runway show that combines fierce fashion with top toys. We are excited to announce this year's playCHIC Fashion Ambassador Panel comprised of some of the most influential Chicago bloggers.

Try a Trend Tuesday: Colored Sunglasses!

Trend. Fad. En Vogue. Craze. Latest Look. All The Rage. Chic. In Thing. Fresh Off The Runway.

Whether you follow trends or shun them, they keep popping up in the world of style. Fashion trends, by definition, are temporary and meant to eventually be replaced by a successor. This (to me) is exactly why they are fun to try! As long as they are affordable and fun, I am always willing to give a new trend a shot. I will be reporting weekly on new trends happening in the world of fashion and beauty and how I work them into my repertoire.

This week's Try a Trend Tuesday is....Colored Sunglasses!

Although many of us own a standard pair of aviators or the standard black oversize ovals, testing out a new color of sunglasses puts a little spring into your season. From cobalt to coral, mint to magenta, you can find affordable options in every color of the rainbow.

I am loving shades of purple for spring, so I test drove a pair of specs from GlassesShop. Yes, these are definitely cheap glasses when compared to their designer counterparts! (They also offer prescription eyeglasses if you are in the market).

Here is what I selected:

  Toulouse Wayfarer in Purple

I loved the color of the frames- so perfect for this time of year. One thing that I wasn't a huge fan of was the color of the lenses. They don't block out the sun as well as others do, so make sure to get dark tinted or polarized lenses. Wondering what the difference is between polarized sunglasses and their counterparts? Polarized sunglasses have a chemical film that reduces glare in addition to brightness; tinted lenses just reduce brightness.

I love ordering sunglasses online- as long as you know what shapes work for your face, there is usually a much better selection that in stores. If you want to give a try, you can get 20% off by using the coupon code CherylX20.

How To Style:

Matchy-matchy is in this year! If you want to match your sunglasses to your accessories, by all means play those colors up. Here are two ways I paired jewelry and sunglasses. The mint ones are from Forever 21 last year- affordable and chic as well!

The earrings on the left are from J. Crew Factory, necklace is from Forever 21. On the right, the earrings are from BaubleBar.

What are your thoughts on the colored sunglasses trend? Are you on board?

Disclosure: I received a complimentary pair of sunglasses from for review purposes. All opinions are honest and my own.

T.J. Maxx Michigan Avenue #Maxxinista

The event I recently attended showcased dozens of the hottest designers featuring this season's latest styles. I will give you one guess where my event occurred.

New York Fashion Week you say?

It was the T.J. Maxx Grand Opening on Michigan Avenue in Chicago.

Some people get excited about a new restaurant or bar opening. Me? This is THE store I have been waiting for to come to The Magnificent Mile. Why pay more for name brands when you can get up to 60% off retail?

As I ascended the escalator to this fabulous new location, a glittery logo in silver and pink greets me letting me know that yes, this is THE most glamorous T.J. Maxx I have ever laid eyes upon.

As I take my first turn into the store, a cheery section of this season's hottest bags catches my eye. Next to it? Luxury luggage of course!

As I continue around the bend, I spy the Runway section. Racks upon racks of luxury brands, all at my fingertips and all incredibly more affordable than their department store counterparts. We pause here for a chat with Jamie Krell, celebrity producer of style segments featured on E! Entertainment and Style Network. Jamie also appears on morning news programs as a style expert on all major networks. She was dressed in a leopard cape that draped elegantly over a gold hardware-accented off white silk blouse and black skinnies tucked into black leather ankle boots. Perfection.

Jamie rolled a rack in of fall fashion must-haves. Her fall capsule included:

  • Athletic chic
  • Menswear
  • Leather and leather detail
  • Blue & black
  • Equestrian
  • Leopard
  • Ankle booties in black and brown
  • Embellishment
  • Backpacks

After a game of The Price is Right- T.J. Maxx-style, we were let loose to shop the store. I bee-lined to the shoe department in search of an item on my fall must have list- black open-toe ankle booties. Of course I was sidetracked by these snake print heels:

I tried on a pair of booties which were practical (mesh vs. leather) but not exactly what I was looking for. And then I spotted them, in the secret size 9 section around the corner- genuine leather for $39.99.

Besides having an amazing array of clothing and accessories, I always adore surfing the beauty goods. I found my FAVORITE polish remover that I received in one of my subscription boxes. Oil-based nail polish remover pads, which retail for $9.99 per pack of 32- at T.J. Maxx for $3.99 for a set of four. Score!

I could have shopped for hours- the caliber of the brands absolutely blew me away. T.J. Maxx, you have totally stepped up your game and I am ready to play!

What are your favorite finds from T.J. Maxx?

How to wear Bold Prints

With bold patterns adorning every retail window this season, smart styling is how you will get it right. Floral is one of my favorite prints, bringing in color, sophistication and a bit of fun is exactly what every closet needs! Choosing the right shape and color combo is what will make this trend a hit or miss.

Here are a few tips while shopping

fabric - pick something durable with structure and not thin and flimsy, you want a great flattering shape

color - look for the neutral in the pattern, what will you pair it with, black, gray, denim, cream etc. floral can look really youthful or cheap if you choose the wrong pattern

outfit - I shop in pieces but with the whole look in mind, so how many ways can you wear the pants? Will they look good with flats and heels? Can you dress them down and up?

bold factor - look for a print with a bold color, even if it's muted with other neutrals, having a bold in the mix allows you play with it and have some fun

Here is my pick! I liked the shape and fabric as well as the neutral base in these Ted Baker trousers. A perfect color scheme... the olive, rust, and a tad of blue and pink. Just the right combo to look expensive and chic but wearable with options! Here is a day and night option. "My style" is totally the black peplum with the hot pink lip, and the unexpected pop from these rockin Kate Spade earrings.

Style TIP - A denim shirt should be in every closet! Denim is the perfect choice to bring a casual vibe but still be structured, flattering and pull it all together! Denim plays down the bold print and keeps it from being over the top.

Lendperk Giveaway!

Lendperk Giveaway!

If you are like us, when we go to an event or a wedding that requires us to get all dressed up and out of our mom uniform, we get really excited! Of course would prefer to wear a new dress to every event or wedding that we attend but that isn't in our budget right now! We normally go for that little black dress we have in the closet that we can transform with different accessories. When we were introduced to Lendperk about a month ago I was beyond excited! Lendperk is the "netflix" of dresses. You are able to rent one dress a month for $20 and keep it for 2 weeks. If you have a lot of events and parties to attend you can rent an unlimited about of dresses in one month for $49! Cool right?

The part we like the most about Lendperk are the dresses! The dresses are all from Anthropologie, Modcloth etc.. They are dresses that will have everyone talking about when you are out on the town!

Lendperk Giveaway

Kristin and I attended the event in Chicago a few weeks ago. This was a perfect occasion for us to use Lendperk! I picked out adorable gold and red dress for the occasion. The thing I liked about lendperk the best was that since I was only "borrowing" the dress, I could pick something that was a little out of my comfort zone. If I was paying $200 for the dress, I probably wouldn't have bought it. I love that renting dresses from LendPerk allows you to try a different look, not break the bank and regret it later! You can step out of your comfort zone for a night!

LendPerk | The Little Style File

I cannot tell you how many compliments we both recieved on our dresses that night! People were stopping us all night long and asking us where our dresses came from!
