Chicago Children’s Theater: The Elephant and The Whale

The Elephant and The Whale, a world premiere all-ages show, is a collaboration between Chicago Children’s Theatre and Redmoon- companies well known for their onstage spectacles. With its abundance of gramophone music, pedaled panoramas, and incredibly detailed puppets, this show doesn’t disappoint. The Elephant and The Whale, directed by Leslie Buxbaum Danzig, is the story of a traveling circus in 1919, and hard times are forcing the weary owners to leave it all behind them. They sell off their possessions one by one; the tent, the clown noses, even their star attraction: the elephant performer Ella.

Ultimately, the circus is purchased by a greedy businessman, who orders a million gallons of sea water for his new attraction, a tank for “mermaids”. A whale is unwittingly trapped in all of those gallons and a new sideshow (that of the ugliest fish on earth) is born. The under appreciated elephant and the homesick whale form a friendship and communicate plans for their escape in what the spectators believe to be beautiful songs.

Chicago Children's Theater

The staging is lovely and the show’s use of puppetry is nothing short of magical. Shadows, contraptions, and miniature scenes played out in trunks all illustrate this tale of adventure and friendship. The energetic cast (Kurt Brocker, David Catlin, Kasey Foster and Becky Poole) shifts seamlessly from narrators to puppeteers to stagehands, all while conveying this gorgeous story. My three year-old was entranced for the full hour, and eagerly called out answers to the actors’ questions. Even though this show is geared for young audiences, adults will find plenty to enjoy, and will be transported alongside the children to the skies and oceans and rolling landscape of this sweet performance.

Mickey Mouse Party

 I’m excited to share with you this Mickey Mouse Party! I created a variety of “Mickey” treats for the two dessert tables.
Mickey Mouse Party
Mickey Mouse PartyMickey Mouse Party
Some of my favorite things about this party was creating the DIY details to add to this party. I found a lot of cute ideas on Pinterest. I bought black lanterns from Hobby Lobby and used card stock and hot glued ears onto the lanterns to make it into a Mickey Mouse head. Another idea I saw online was creating  Styrofoam Mickey heads. I bought Styrofoam balls and black paint and created these adorable little decorations to add to the dessert tables.
Mickey Mouse Party
 The back drops to each table were so simple and easy to create as well. All you need is foam boards, material, tacks, ribbon and scrap book paper. I created several Mickey banners with using scrap book and card stock paper. I made different size Mickey’s with black card stock and assembled everything onto the back drop. You can use this back drop idea with any kind of theme for your next party.

All of my party printables were created by Lauren Haddox Deisgns. I love using party printables for each of my parties because it helps tie in the entire theme throughout the party. Having a Mickey Mouse Party? Check out my Mickey Mouse Cookie Tutorial!

Fun Kids Spring Accessories for Boys & Girls

kids spring accessories

Accessories can make or break an outfit. They really have the power to take a basic look and step it up a notch to make it notable. I have two little girls who absolutely love bows, sparkles, hats, shoes, necklaces…. you name it! It’s fun for my daughters and me to pick pretty pieces that go with their outfits every day, so we’ve decided to share some of our spring favorites with you today for boys and girls.
I don’t have any little boys of my own, but for the adorable little boys in your life, here are some ideas:
Kids Spring Accessories

4. Sunglasses. || 5. Bow tie. || 6. Hat. ||
7. Socks. || 8. Red HighTops. || 9. Gingham Tie.
The boys I know especially love the cool sneakers and watches. It’s also fun for them to try to look like their daddies with ties and bow ties and Wayfair sunglasses.
Now for the girls: there is no end to cuteness for girls, so this is but a fraction of what I’m eyeing right now for my girls:

Sparkles, polka dots, and practicality all make for a fantastic spring accessory wardrobe. My girls love scarves because they’re cheerful and costume-like, and I love that it makes it easy to keep them warm in the springy breezes. The barrettes and sparkly hair ties are an incentive to get them to let me brush their tangles, and the hats do all the work to cover the tangles if none of us want to battle the hair brushing. Shoelaces in appealing colors are the perfect way to spruce up old sneakers and make my girls want to wear them again, and a backpack is an ideal carrier for all the toys they think they need for every excursion.
We love accessories that help make getting dressed in the morning a fresh and exciting time for everyone!

Every Day A Play Day: A boy outisde

This week in Chicago I have been singing “Rain Rain Go Away!” My 3 year old partner in crime doesn’t let the rain stop him and the other day we went on a worm hunt! The ground isn’t warm enough and of course we didn’t find any worms…..but he did enjoy playing in puddles.

I Want Candy | Gymboree Clothing Review

It was Spring Break. Like all great moms, we brought our kids to the museum.

The Candy Museum.

The kids couldn’t wait for warm weather to wear their new Gymboree outfits.  Since we were going to be inside the entire day, we let them pretend it wasn’t really 42 degrees outside and set them loose in one of the happiest places in Chicago.

Little Artists: Draw Me Your Story

Sometimes the simplest idea can spark an exciting journey of the imagination in your kids.  My second grader is really great at reading now and seems to enjoy discovering stories by herself. My kindergartner has always had a great flair for creating stories in her head. All of these new adventures going on in our house inspired a creative idea in me.

I’ve done body outlines of my girls many, many times before and had them decorate “themselves”. What if I took it a step further, changed the idea a bit, and encouraged the girls to  put themselves inside a picture and story?

First, I found a photo (just the face)  on my computer of each girl and printed it out on regular printer paper at roughly 8×10. The girls cut out just the faces and hair.kids photo projects

I had some large paper lying around, but you can buy big rolls of white craft paper at any craft store, or even Walmart. In a pinch, tape a small stack of printer paper together to make one big piece. I placed each girls’ face on a sheet and told them I wanted to draw an outline of them, but needed a story first. What did they want to do in their picture? Were they outside or inside? Don’t feel nervous about drawing. You can even draw a stick figure. The idea is to give kids a jumping-off point for their own creative adventures. It really was a whole new ballgame to have their own faces on the artwork! So much excitement!

Delia decided she wanted to spread her wings. Zoe wanted to hold a cake. As you can see, I didn’t spend a whole lot of time on drawing the outlines.

kids photo projectsI then brought out some art supplies and let the girls go wild. I told them that I would love to see them tell a story with their art, and their image. It was fun for them to have a direction, but they had full creative license. This idea doesn’t have to be expensive. You can use whatever art supplies you have, or even tin foil, rice, food coloring, etc…. Kids can use anything as an art supply!

It was rewarding for me, as a mom, to see what imagination the kids have and it was a great afternoon for my girls. Keep the life-size artwork and let kids add to the story later on. Maybe a rainy day, perhaps?
