Mega Bloks Barbie Build ‘N Style Luxury Mansion

My girls love a play date.  And they love Barbie.  So when we had the chance to invite friends over to play with the new Mega Blocks Barbie Build ‘N Style Luxury Mansion?  Let’s just say there was lots of shrieking involved.

I knew the girls would love the Barbie Mega Bloks at first, but I wasn’t sure how long they would really play with the toys. When planning the play date, I made sure to have back up activities ready to go just in case.  But to our surprise, the girls played with the Mega Bloks for hours.

Here, take a look!

All of the girls had a blast.  They played individually and they played together.  Rooms were redecorated and Barbie (and friends) made about 100 wardrobe changes throughout the afternoon.

Besides having fun with their girlfriends, each guest received a fun parting gift to bring the Mega Bloks Barbie fun home to their own house!

The Mega Bloks Barbie Build ‘N Style Luxury Mansion is still going strong at our house and we just know the girly girl at your house would love it just as much.

This Barbie Party was a blast and we are going to share all of the party details later this week.  For now we want to thank Mommy Parties for this opportunity and the products we received.  While products were provided for this post, all content is original and opinions my own.  Images for this post are by Tales of a Dream Photography and the FAB cake featured in the video is by Dessert Menu.

Photographing Your Kids: Capturing The Everyday!

Photographing your kids can be a challenge.  As a photographer, I always want a memory card full of those perfect shots. In reality, I may get one GREAT shot for every 25-35 clicks. I have walls (and a computer) full of “pretty shots” of my girls. You know, the ones where their smiles are perfect, their hair is styled, and their boutique clothing is shiny and new.

I realized the other day that all of my shots of them pretty much look the same. While my youngest daughter is very much a “fashionista”, my oldest daughter is happiest in t-shirts and leggings. I have hundreds of photos of my girls just being them…… everyday. I don’t show them online because many times, they aren’t technically perfect. We always want to show off our best work, right?

Well….kids aren’t little mannequins (at least mine aren’t!). They love getting messy with art projects, mud, dirt and all of the grime associated with kid-living. I decided I wanted to capture and celebrate more of those moments. They are my most treasured photographs of my girls. I know that 50 years from now, I can look back at these photos and remember exactly what they were doing.

While I’m not comfortable saying that bad photography is great, sometimes the imperfect is just better than the perfect to convey mood, emotion or an event. The artist in me is always striving to create not just a snapshot, but an artful telling of a story. Some of the photos of my girls don’t even them in it, but I smile and remember exactly what that moment was about. I am lucky, on occasion, to actually get that GREAT everyday photo, too.

So, I’m challenging everyone to celebrate imperfect photographs and embrace the purity of the moments captured! Here are a few examples of my FAVORITE  moments with my girls.

Photo 1: Here, as a photographer, my first thought is that her face is turned away from the light. As a mom, this is EXACTLY my baby and that trumps everything!

Photo 2:  Not one pixel of this photo is in focus, but it is my favorite of 2012. Seeing two sisters laughing so incredibly hard together is priceless, and again, trumps technical perfection.

Photo 3:  Another in-between shot, where not one bit is in focus. The imaginative twirling? So exactly her personality.

Photo 4:  Nothing spectacular about this photo, but the moment was such a great one!

Capturing family moments, The Little Style FilePhoto 5:  My girls aren’t even featured here, and it’s not particularly amazing, but come on! There are sequins and rocks. This definitely called for documentation.

When they are teenagers, I never want to forget that they shared one pair of roller skates to scoot around the living room (blurry photo and all). Get clicking and share with us on instagram with #TLSFPhotoChallenge! You can strive for perfection, but be sure to see the beauty in the imperfect!

Kids DIY Valentines

The other day, as I was cleaning the kitchen, my 6 year old, Abryn had been very busy and very quiet for some time.  When I noticed what she was working on I just had to share it!

She was making her own valentines for her friends at school.  With no help from mom, she drew 2 little hearts on the outside and colored them red and then on the inside wrote “i love you.” She was very proud of herself and even asked me to video tape her! At that I laughed, but I thought a few pretty pictures and a quick tutorial would help your littles get started.  There is just something about receiving something handmade.

DIY Valentines

For the kids version of DIY Valentines, here is what you need:

-Paper, or card stock in any color (target) has a great $1 section filled with all kinds of valentine stickers, paper, envelopes etc.

- Envelopes + liners if you want to add a bit of detail

- Markers

- Valentine Stickers

- Glue Stick

Write a sweet little note on the inside of the card or use some of the classic valentine lingo like “your rad,” “be mine,” “so sweet,” “hugs,” etc.

Next decorate the envelope with stickers or hand drawn hearts and place the card in the envelope. Now for the glue…

Abryn’s favorite part, use the glue stick to secure the envelope down or a big sticker and voila, pretty handmade valentines!

Do you make or buy your kids Valentine’s Day cards?

Little Yogi

Last week my three year old daughter, Madeline, and I attended a Parents As Teachers kids yoga playgroup.  The description sounded fun and we are all about fit and healthy kids so we decided to give it a try.  Little did I know my Madeline would fall in love with kids yoga and incorporate into our every day routine.

Our kids yoga class was taught by Reese Emery Ryzewski, author of The Yoga ABC’s.   She is a fitness expert and brought a copy of the book for each family to take home.  The best part of The Yoga ABC’s is that the book lies open flat so kids can pick a page, look at the illustration and do the pose.  As Madeline says, “I can do yoga ALL BY MYSELF.”  And she really can!

Look at that smile!  It started at A and didn’t let up until way past Z.  As it turns out, kids yoga is great for little bodies and it’s really easy to get your family started.  Here’s a little inspiration…

Great Wolf Lodge | Snowland

Wow oh wow.  When you combine kids’ two most favorite things – snow and water – you know it’s going to be nothing but fun!  Here was our trip to Snowland at Great Wolf Lodge.

Next time we go – oh there will be a next time – we are also going to hit up the beauty salon and bowling alley.  This time we couldn’t peel the kids away from the snow in the lobby and the water slides!

One more thing to mention, at Great Wolf Lodge when you check in everyone gets bracelets.  For the adults, these are no ordinary get in the water park bracelets.  These bracelets are your room key and (if you choose) your debit/credit card!  No worrying about your wallet and room key – we literally walked down the hall from our room to the water park carrying nothing.  So brilliant!

We had a great time at Snowland at Great Wolf Lodge.  For our families coming from the Chicago area and the Nashville area, Cincinnati was a great spot to meet in the middle and have a fun mini vacation!

Has your family taken a trip to an indoor water park?

Dear Santa!

As a parent it is always fun to see what your child will write to Santa! Of course some kids need a little bit of help but whatever they come with it is a fun treasure for years to come! All of TLSF kids shared their Dear Santa letters in The Ultimate Holiday Gift Guide!

The Newest Bond Girl

Is me.

Yep, that’s right.  I won’t be starring in the next film, but I will now actually go watch the James Bond movies in the theaters.

Honestly, I never understood the hype.  Is James Bond really that cool?  What is with all of the crazy sidekick names?

Now I get it.  I was riding in an SUV next to James Bond.  I was in the tunnel with him when it exploded.  James and I are now like besties.

You might be wondering what converted me.  Here’s the answer, I saw Skyfall in IMAX.

IMAX experience

Obviously I was convinced by my dad and husband that this would be a good idea.  I was loving the new Adele song so I decided to give it a whirl.  As soon as you walk into an IMAX theater, you know it’s a completely different experience.

imax experience

The screen is huge which makes it feel like you are in the movie, and this wasn’t even in 3-D.  The sound is incredible and there is just a feeling of being engulfed by the film.  You forget where you are and who you are with and just focus on the film.

Like I said, James Bond and I now get along great and we owe it all to our IMAX experience.  Will I go into our family room and watch all of the James Bond movies on DVD?  Doubt it.  Well, maybe if my husband put in an IMAX theater for Christmas. But I know know that there probably isn’t a movie I would refuse if it was at an IMAX theater.

Thanks to Everywhere LLC for providing us with compensation and tickets to the movie.  All opinions expressed are honest and my own.
