Little Philanthropist: Lucinda + Smile Train

The Little Style File first introduced you to the adorable twins Lucinda and Delia this past Fall in our School Style series.  What we didn’t share with you then is that Lucinda was born with a cleft lip and palate and has gone through two successful corrective surgeries.

Lucinda is passionate for raising money for Smile Train, the largest cleft charity helping children receive surgeries that can change their lives.  Here are photos of Lucinda before and after her cleft palate surgeries.

This little philanthropist, with the help of her mom, put together a fundraising page to help other children get the surgeries they need.  The Little Style File celebrates children like Lucinda who see a need and want to help other children.

How can you get involved?  Visit Lucinda’s fundraising page and make a donation.  Click the ‘tell a friend’ button and share Lucinda’s page with friends and family.  Like Smile Train on Facebook and share the page with your friends.  On a grander scale, you could host a Smile Train fundraiser or become a medical volunteer.

Join us in helping Lucinda reach her fundraising goals.  She is a Kindergartner with big plans to help other children born just like her!

Little Yogi

Last week my three year old daughter, Madeline, and I attended a Parents As Teachers kids yoga playgroup.  The description sounded fun and we are all about fit and healthy kids so we decided to give it a try.  Little did I know my Madeline would fall in love with kids yoga and incorporate into our every day routine.

Our kids yoga class was taught by Reese Emery Ryzewski, author of The Yoga ABC’s.   She is a fitness expert and brought a copy of the book for each family to take home.  The best part of The Yoga ABC’s is that the book lies open flat so kids can pick a page, look at the illustration and do the pose.  As Madeline says, “I can do yoga ALL BY MYSELF.”  And she really can!

Look at that smile!  It started at A and didn’t let up until way past Z.  As it turns out, kids yoga is great for little bodies and it’s really easy to get your family started.  Here’s a little inspiration…

Great Glasses Play Day!

Since last January I have received quite the education in children’s vision.  When Ellie was diagnosed as being far sighted with astigmatisms in both eyes, we quickly learned the do’s and don’ts of eye exams, that sparkly pink glasses make everyone happy and about fun organizations like Great Glasses Play Day.

Great Glasses Play Day is happening August 5th around the world.  It’s a day to get out and play and celebrate children who wear glasses as well as bring awareness that early screening matters.  I was honored to put together an outfit inspiration board as well as a party inspiration board for Great Glasses Play Day!

To find locations near you hosting a Great Glasses Play Day CLICK HERE, to learn how you can get your community involved CLICK HERE, or to celebrate online CLICK HERE.  You can even shop for apparel and accessories for Great Glasses Play Day HERE.  Ellie has her shirt and is ready to party!

Cool Kids Frames for $175 and Less

We’ve been talking glasses today on The Little Style File.  CLICK HERE to see Ellie’s new look and CLICK HERE to read all about children’s eye exams and how to choose glasses for your kids.

Now lets talk frames.  Not what hangs on the walls in your kids’ rooms, the other kind of frames.  For me, the most overwhelming part about my child getting glasses was picking out the frames.

Not only did I have an almost five year old begging for frames that were hot pink with peace signs, but I was trying to pick one set of glasses to match every outfit.  Now that is pressure!  Obviously you need to try frames on your child to see what looks best, but here our some of our favorite cool frames for $175 and under.

What you need to know about eye exams & how to choose glasses for your child.

For the backstory on how our four year old daughter ended up with her first pair of glasses, CLICK HERE.

Like I said earlier, glasses were totally NOT on our radar.  But looking back at Ellie’s pre-kinderagrten class photo from this fall, she will be the fourth student out of twelve to sport frames when she walks into class with glasses today.

Here is what you need to know about eye exams and selecting frames for your child:

Eye exams should begin at age 3 unless earlier problems are noticed by your child’s physician.  This usually entails reading pictures off of an eye chart at the pediatrician’s office.  If you have any concerns – squinting, blinking, anything that makes you think there could be an issue or if your child struggles with that test, visit a Pediatric Optometrist for a more thorough exam.

As a side note, the optometrist may perform a few uncomfortable exams.  Namely, the puff of air in the eyes and eye dilation.  Ellie didn’t mind the puff of air but the dilation really upset her.  A walk over to look at frames and a few stickers were a great distraction.

If your child does need glasses, here are a few things to consider:

1.  Let your child be involved in picking out the frames.  Now, you may have noticed that Ellie doesn’t have hot pink frames with peace signs all over them, her first choice.  But she does have a little bling on the sides that make them fun for her.

2.  Select durable frames.  Glasses have come a long way since we were kids.  There are frames made out of 100% rubber with no hinges, metal frames that are extremely flexible and plastic frames that are very durable.  Seek these out because even if they are a little more expensive they will hopefully be less expensive in the long run.

3.  When fitting the frames, make sure your child is looking through the lenses and not over them.  That was huge when trying on frames with Ellie.  Those trendy little rectangles?  None of them worked.  She looked over the top defeating the purpose of wearing glasses.

4.  Polycarbonate lenses are the best for kids.  They are lightweight, scratch resistent and an all around safer choice with kids.  Transition and anti-glare lenses aren’t necessary for kids when they are young because their eyes are changing and so may be their prescriptions.

This afternoon The Little Style File is sharing our favorite frames for kids for $175 or less, be sure to come back and see what we picked!

For information on free eye exams in your area, visit Lions Club International.  Our family is so happy they were there to screen kids at our district’s Kindergarten screening!
