Accessories have always been a part of my life, as a little girl dressing up in my moms gowns and jewels, to adorning a few crowns in my pageant days, and now in my every day personal style. As a busy mom and business owner, I have come to love designing accessories specifically to my clients unique style. A reflection of who they are, a bit of their story. Today, I am honored to be able to share some of my story with you. The background into my family and the reason I took the plunge and started my own business, HeirBloom. I feel so blessed to have found a niche, a creative outlet that others can enjoy, and allows me to be home with my twins who are 19 months. I have 4 girls, and I dream of having a store front that we can all share in and enjoy together some day. I have designed over 500 custom pieces and not one an exact replica! I use vintage and estate jewels, either my families or yours, and redesign them into new and unique accessories. For brides, little ones, portrait photography, events, every day style, and the pretty details to the moments you remember for life!

One of my favorite things to do, is styling wardrobe and then designing specific to the looks you love best!  If your style is minimal with neutral colors, you may want something metal, with charms or natural stones. Or adding a pop of color is always a fantastic way to show your fun side! You may want to make a bold statement, with lots of color and blended patterns, or have a special event your going to, with that perfect dress and need just the right piece to bring it all together.

I recently designed this necklace for a photo shoot and totally fell in love with the colors and tribal feel it sets off.  I used beads and different fabrics and fringe and even a vintage earring to tie it all together. Photo Credit: Jeff Anderson, Styling: Ahndea May

I wanted to show you 3 different ways to style this necklace. It doesn’t matter if your minimalistic, chic, a sophisticate, or more boheme, you can add your flare to the same necklace and change the entire vibe.  That is the beauty of accessories, each little detail you add, completes your look, makes a statement, showcases your personality and bottom line they are just fun! If you don’t like taking risks with your wardrobe picks, take risks with your accessories and dare to be a bit edgy.

Here is a sneak peek from my latest bridal shoot. I designed this piece with feminine florals, vintage jewels and pearls and some very special detailing. Bridal is one of my favorite things to design. I work with the bride to create something unique only to her. Incorporating elements from her dress, veil or family heirlooms to give that special significance. Exciting projects are on the horizon this summer so make sure to follow my blog for the latest news. I haven’t even shared this yet… but HeirBloom will be a featured accessory on my favorite Stylist Summer Watkins wedding website Grey Likes Weddings starting next week!

what to wear to a wedding: boys edition

It’s wedding week at The Little Style File!  From ring bearers to flower girls to the proud parents, we’re showing off our favorite summer wedding looks.  The Little Style File readers are always asking “What should boys wear to a wedding?”  Really, there are no rules!  Here are some of our favorite suggestions for what to wear to a wedding: boys edition.

From seersucker to polka dots, tot trends are taking on a life of their own! No longer do little boys have to don heavy wool suits in the middle of summer when attending or participating in a wedding. The options are limitless, so mix and match warm-weather fashion with a touch of formal flair!

what to wear to a wedding: boys

My son was recently the ring bearer in a beautiful outdoor wedding just outside of San Diego, California. I searched high and low for the perfect mix of laid-back California chic that would complement the charcoal suits of the groomsmen. Here is a rundown of his outfit:

If you are looking for a full suit, why not try seersucker or linen? These materials are light, breathable and classic- sure to never go out of style. Pair these suits with a gingham, nautical stripe or even polka dot tie or bow tie!

Sibling Style: Memorial Day

Woohoo!  It’s the unofficial start of summer this weekend.  If you have fun Memorial Day Weekend plans, here are stylish sibling outfits available at your local mall for your kids to show off their patriotic side!

JCrew’s mini version, Crewcut Kids always has chic and stylish family clothes in store.

Next up are some of our favorite game day looks from The Children’s Place.

Are you an Americana purist? You’ll love these stars and stripes from Gymboree!

Gap is always a staple on our trips to the mall for family clothes.  Mixing and matching pieces for baby, toddler and kid gives all of the little members of the family super cute looks.

While I’m proud to be an American, I typically don’t dress my kids in head to toe red, white and blue.  When choosing outfits for a patriotic occasion, I try to stick with pieces that are navy and white or red and white and mix in fun accessories to make the complete look ‘All American’.

What are your holiday weekend plans?  Will your family be wearing red, white and blue?

Spring Basics For Mom

Once upon a time, I could wake up in the morning, take a shower, eat breakfast, stand in my closet for a while until I decided what to wear, blow dry my hair and put on some make up.  I even had time to change outfits if I didn’t like what I chose!

Alas, now as a mommy, those days are long gone.  I’m lucky to brush my hair and put on something clean as I run around the house trying to get my preschooler ready for school and get myself off to work.  I love fashion, but many times you would never know it by how I look!  So I am always trying to find the best ways to somehow look slightly put together, feel comfortable and do so in about 20 seconds.  I have put together some fashion suggestions that are both on trend, comfortable and especially good for mamas.  Rev up your engines ladies…here we go!

Spring Basics for Mom | The Little Style File

Printed Pants – printed pants have been and continue to be a big trend right now.  Skinny jeans, harem pants, capris – there is a style for everyone.  You can find anything from floral prints to ethnic prints to polka dots, the list goes on.  And why do I think these are super duper great for mamas?  Well, just throw on a t shirt or button down and voila, you look stylish in a matter of seconds with your sassy statement pants.  But I save the best for last – don’t worry if your baby spits up on them, or your toddler spills apple sauce on them, you can just pretend its part of the design!  “No, silly, that’s not poop, that’s part of the pattern.”

Boots – boots are a big trend now as well even for Spring – low, mid calf, high – they all look cute.  Boots easily give an otherwise simple outfit a lot of va-va-voom!  Pair some up with skinny jeans or a cute dress – easy breezy and tres chic.  And you know what, mamas?  They can also make you feel self confident and strong.    So when your preschooler starts having a melt down when you tell her “no, you cannot wear my underwear as a hat to school for show and tell” you’ll be in your boots feeling self assured that you can survive this tantrum calm, cool and collect (and stylish).

Tunics – ahhhh tunics, these are a mother’s savior.  There are oh so many things I love about tunics.  First off, pair them with some leggings or skinny jeans and you look great in a matter of seconds.  However, what’s even better about them is when you are going through that awkward body transitioning period from just having a baby to slowly losing the baby weight; tunics are a great way to hide your little belly.  Not to mention your tush if that grew a bit too!  (mine did!)  So buy a slew of them and enjoy!  You’ll feel cozy and look great.

Statement glasses – big for Spring 2013 are fun statement glasses.  Cool shapes, fun prints and bright colors.  Feeling like you’re outfit looks boring?  Well then throw on a pair of these glasses to zazz things up.  Eyes bloodshot with dark circles from nursing half the night or being woken up by a toddler at 4 am?  Well, get these sunglasses on and just look cool.  No one has to know you’re about to pass out from exhaustion.

Pop Color Boys Denim

This spring is brining us lots of color and it’s not just for the girls! The boys can join in the fun and look bright and stylish, too! How you ask? By adding pop color boys denim.  Mixing denim, stripes, and textures in every color you can think of lets your little man express his fun side.

Fashion for boys has certainly stepped up. I remember the days where it was hard to find a plaid button up or denim that was NOT light wash cargo. I am even able to cross over and put my girls in a statement boy’s blazer or jacket. It is right on trend to mix masculine and feminine. Pairing a military jacket with a ruffle gray tee and a denim skirt, yes please. Okay, back to the boys… Color denim is now considered a “dressy” new slack if you will. Pairing a nice mustard denim with a plaid button up, tie and jacket… love it.

Ted Baker LAMBOW – Check linen bowtie / Gap Long Sleeve Chambray Shirt / Gap First Five Pocket Jeans / Zara Striped Sweatshirt / Quiksilver Boys 2-7 Shanty Jacket / Old Navy Boys Pop Color Skinny Jeans / Tiny TOMS Magenta Wool Fleece Botas Size 11 / TOMS Natural Burlap Bimini Tiny TOMS Classics size 8

A few style tips:

1. Pick your color denim first and then build from there.

2. Remember, a simple white tee and a pair of cool kicks is stylish enough, sometimes simple is better.

3. Look for a neutral jacket, like the green military that can easily be layered.  A plaid button up is a great statement piece and can be another layer when creating a more stylized look.

How are you styling your man? Or, how is he styling himself?

I Want Candy | Gymboree Clothing Review

It was Spring Break. Like all great moms, we brought our kids to the museum.

The Candy Museum.

The kids couldn’t wait for warm weather to wear their new Gymboree outfits.  Since we were going to be inside the entire day, we let them pretend it wasn’t really 42 degrees outside and set them loose in one of the happiest places in Chicago.

Sister Style | Spring Special Occasion

Hi, my name is Kristin.  And I’m addicted to coordinating my daughters’ clothes.  Wish I was joking.  I get a little smile when they decide to wear coordinating night gowns to bed.

But it’s not really my fault.

It’s genetic.

For the big S-I-X, my mom found these outfits at Mini Boden.  The girls squealed when they opened the boxes to see chiffon rosettes, gold trim and hot pink sequins.  For this installment of Family Style, we are featuring 6th Birthday Sister Style.

Let the swooning begin.

Mini Boden Girls Dresses

The key to coordinating looks is to pull from the same color palate and pick complimentary pieces.  Bonus points if you can let each girls’ personality shine through!

Here is the birthday girl!  Hard to believe my first baby is SIX!

Style x 2

twin style | how to dress twins

Twin Style!  Being a mom of twins is busy but so fun! Trying to get these 2 minis wrangled down long enough to get dressed is a major feet and sometimes we keep it as simple as jammies! As a wardrobe stylist, I absolutely love to play dress up with my girls. I have a few tips to keeping them unique but similar and of course so darn cute!

I rarely dress them exactly the same, because one they are different in so many ways and two it would be hard not spending a fortune buying 2 of everything.

Shop the line… each retailer launches their clothing in lines, ie. Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter. When shopping at any store you will notice the cohesion within a line. Similar patter, print, color and theme. **money saver** shop end of seasons.

What I look for:

This applies to same sex or boy girl twins

2 bottoms (one pattern one solid)

2 tops (different color but same decal or theme on front)

1 dress & 1 skirt (if boys you could get a button up and a cardigan)

1 jacket & 1 vest (if available)

1 sweater or cardigan (go neutral but can have polka dots or stripes)

2 socks (different colors)

Dress the personality - My Arlie is the one in the pink top and she is my rough n tumble, all over, loves balls and running! She does not do well in skirts as she gets caught up and slowed down. I tend to put her in leggings and dresses. Adie, is in the leopard pants and is more dainty and cautious. She sits sweetly and observes vs running full steam ahead. Knowing this, helps me choose what to dress them in.

Build on what you have – If your like me, I am scrambling in the morning to get my big kids off to school and usually grab whatever is clean and available to throw on the twins. Believe it or not, this is when I put together some of the cutest looks.

twin style

A few quick rules:

Try to keep 1 or 2 items the same (socks + shoes) this will tie it together

Offset the print with a neutral or solid (pant + sweater) you can always tone down a look with a cardi

Have fun with it, pick colors, polka dots, stripes, and animals

twin style | how to dress twins

This picture was from a little photo shoot for my accessory designs HeirBloom. Yes these are all mine! Count um, 1,2,3,4 5! I love styling family portraits in the not so normal way. I am known to use lots of different colors, prints and fabric textures. They are similar enough to still blend but allow for tons of personality! The twins were the stars of this shot, and I loved how simple Arlie (left) was in the denim dress, fussed up with a few pretties and Adie (right) had more of a stylized look which I softened with the lavender shrug.

Any occasion will do.  Our Barbie Party was a glam play date to test out the new Mega Bloks Barbie Build ‘N Style Luxury Mansion. But we’ll take any excuse to get our favorite friends together for an afternoon of girly fun!

Barbie Party | The Little Style File

Because my friends are awesome and all about a good party theme, we got each girl a Vintage Barbie Silhouette Tee from Lou Lou Belle’s.  Lana, the owner of the shop, created a different shirt for each girl complete with three dimensional bow and monogram.  While the girls got their Barbie Tees for the party, they make a fun addition to any little girl’s closet!

Barbie Party | The Little Style File

In my personal opinion, every Barbie Party needs a Barbie Cake!  Our Barbie Cake was from the wonderful Chicago area bakery, Dessert Menu.  The five layer cake was delicious and the dress was entirely edible.  The girls were not thrilled about destroying Barbie’s dress so we cut from the back and Barbie stayed beautiful.

To accompany the Barbie Cake we had a sweet table filled with Pink Popcorn, yogurt parfaits and fresh berries.  Girls were offered pink lemonade or pink milk in their vintage Barbie Party glass bottles with complimenting pink and white paper straws.  All of which were created from the Barbie Party Printable kit.

Family Style: Winter Family Photo Outfit Ideas

Is there a family out there who would want to schedule outdoor winter family photos  … in Chicago?  Yes there is!  So The Little Style File is here to help with winter family photo outfit ideas.

Photographer Shayna Hardy scheduled a session with photog friend Julia Franzosa and these brave women are taking Shayna’s family outside for a winter photo shoot.  And they enlisted TLSF Styling Services to help.

When outside in the winter, layering is key.  Dad has a black pea coat in his closet and we found a gorgeous royal purple coat for mom.  Coordinating colored coats in different styles will help keep the little guys nice and cozy.

Outfits for the boys were built from turquoise, grey, black and white.  Despite being frigid outside, spring is around the corner and the turquoise lightens things up.  Mixing patterns and textures create a coordinated but not matchy matchy look.  Skinny jeans, a sweater, black riding boots and stylish yet warm hat complete the look for mom.  Dad’s look stays casual with relaxed jeans, fun tennies and striped sweater.
